China's petroleum coke imports poised to rise to 1.2 million tonnes in Mar

OilChem estimates that China might raise its import volume of petroleum coke to 1.20 million tonnes in March to fill the demand gap for medium and high-sulphur petroleum coke in the domestic market.

China still showes robust demand for medium and high-sulphur petroleum coke, especially the medium and high-sulphur petroleum coke with the vanadium content of less than 400ppm. However, the medium and high-sulphur petroleum coke production in China is projected to wane in March, due to refinery maintenance peak from March to April.

China Delayed Coking Unit Maintenance Schedule in Mar and Apr, 2025 (Unit: mln t/y)

As shown in above chart, a large amount of Sinopec member refineries, which mainly produce medium and high-sulphur petroleum coke, are estimated to shut down their delayed coking units for maintenance in March and April, involving a combined capacity of 15 million tonnes/year, which might result in a fall in the production for medium and high-sulphur petroleum coke.

However, owing to the robust demand for medium and high-sulphur petroleum coke with the vanadium content of less than 400ppm, China domestic refineries have to import more medium and high-sulphur petroleum coke to meet their need. In addition, medium and high-sulphur petroleum coke imports will make up for a larger proportion in total petroleum coke imports in March.
